Danba County is located in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It is known as the county of thousand watchtowers, owning the most ancient blockhouses of Rgyal-rong Tibetan area. The history of Dnaba’s watchtower could be dated back to Qin Dynasty. Originally this kind of watchtower was borrowed from Qiang Minority. As time went by, Danba’s blockhouses became more immense in scale, supernormal in momentum that diversified watchtowers were derived from their ancestors. There are four-corner watchtower, five-corner watchtower, six-corner watchtower and eight-corner watchtower in varieties, and the heights of the tower gradually went up from 10 meters, 20 meters to 30 meters or even 35 meters. The blockhouse built at the key traffic passes was mainly for defense in military, while the one constructed for minority hereditary headman, was called the official watchtower. Beside these, Danba also possesses two of the three existing thirteen-corner watchtowers in the world. After thousand years of weathering, ancient watchtowers still stand majestically, showing us the extremely skillful and particularly magnificent art of architecture. Every corner, stone and mud of the watchtower and Tibetan house were forged by blood as well as sweat of Tibetan forefathers. They recorded a glorious page in Tibetan architectural history.
